Longing for Campania

Campania - the ager felix of Italy

It is not just the area that appeared in many songs, it is an area that many dream of. No matter how many negative headlines are associated with Naples - one thing remains, the beauty. You will find Amalfi, Capri and Sorrento in vain or only marginally on this trip, we would rather like to show you the unknown side of Campania, which was not overrun by tourists.
Simply enjoy the known and unknown sides of a wonderful region.

Day 1: Welcome to the Land of Mignon
We will meet you at the airport in Naples. Almost in the immediate vicinity of many sights, you can move into a 3-star hotel near Caserta. Depending on the arrival time, ideally around noon, appropriate excursions e.g. the Reggia of Caserta (optional)

Day 2: Napoli total
Naples may be infamous, but it also has gorgeous cultural assets. A whole day must be planned for Naples, because its Greco-Roman “ventre”, ie its historic city center, laid out in a checkerboard pattern, shows it from its impressive side.
To name just a few sights that should not be missed: the Nativity Street, Piazza San Domenico, the Sansevero Chapel with the magnificent statue of the Veiled Christ, the magnificent Gesu 'Nuovo Church, the beautiful majolica of Santa Chiara, the underground Naples, Not to forget San Gennaro and his blood in the cathedral ... There are also literary cafés in Piazza Bellini, the restaurant where the best pizza is made and so much more. At this point you can say: Bella Napoli.

3rd day: by gladiators and other Romans
Capua and S. Maria Capua Vetere were known for fighting gladiators. In 73 BC Spartacus the slave uprising started from Capua after he and 78 other gladiators broke out of a gladiator school. Capua was actually the most powerful and luxurious city in Campania and certainly one of the oldest (800 BC). Today it is worth a visit in connection with S. Maria Vetere. Be it the largest amphitheater after Rome, the so-called gladiator school, the Hadrian's Arch and not forgetting Mithräum, a rare and probably unique place of worship that occurs here in Capua Vetere.

4th day: Where it smokes and bubbles
Naples and Vesuvius are like Siamese twins. It is therefore almost a must to have been on Vesuvius. The ascent is very impressive and if you want to walk the last distance to the crater rim, you can imagine what if ... Even if every visitor to Naples climbs up to Vesuvius, it is and remains fascinating even with mass tourism. After a small lunch, with
magnificent view in the middle of the driveway to Vesuvius, we continue to Ercolano. At the foot of Vesuvius are the excavations of the city, which the volcano 79 AD. fell victim. Unlike in Pompeii, you can imagine life at that time very well, because the buildings are in good condition. Before the buildings were covered with ashes, their interior was already filled, so the roofs did not collapse.
Herculaneum lay underneath the dense tufa mass of approx. 20 m height and was thus preserved. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon for dinner.

Day 5: Benevento and Montesarchio - a street brings wealth
In the morning, take an excursion with a walking tour of Benevento. There are not many contemporary witnesses of the ancient city on Via Appia, but its structure shows that the poor village once flourished in the times of the Romans. In addition to the Arch of Trajan, the Church of S. Sophia, created under the Longobards, we can still see the Ponte Leproso, through which one had entered the city. After a lunch break we head to Montesarchio, a tiny town with a large fortress. After a visit to the very special museum, you return to the hotel, where other surprises await.
Day 6: Heavenly
The next location is the Palinuro area. However, before you move into your next accommodation there in the late afternoon, we will show you two of the highlights of Campania. Ravello. Not only the panoramas make this place so worth seeing, it is also its architectural pearls. The Villa Rufolo and the Villa Cimbrone with antique Sicilian-Arabic style elements will remain unforgettable. You can find them on all brochures, but the reality is a little nicer than all the pictures. Afterwards you have the opportunity to have a look around Amalfi. In the late afternoon you finally arrive at the Castello near Palinuro, where you have a special kind of accommodation for two nights.

Day 7: Take a breather in the Cilento
The Cilento is now a popular travel destination, but the Cilento has still been able to retain its beauty. Your trip will include: Palinuro, one of the most beautiful ports in the Cilento. From here boat trip to the Cilento
Grotta Azzurra and the other grottos, such as the Grotta degli Infreschi. Drive to Camerota. Visit to the historical center. In between, of course, a delicious fish meal by the sea.

Day 8: Animal luxury and human genius
You have seen a lot in the last few days, but that also means a lot of effort. Hence a slower pace today. Through the hinterland you will then taste the original Mozzarella di Bufala on a buffalo farm near Paestum (together with salad, etc. = lunch). You will be amazed at what you can find on such a buffalo farm! Not to mention the luxury life that these buffalos lead.
Since we are only a stone's throw from Paestum, you should take a look at this magnificent temple complex and the associated museum. To shorten the journey to the airport the next day, you will drive to Caserta to the hotel in the late afternoon, where you will also have dinner.

Day 9: Ciao, ciao and an Arrivederci
On this day we return to Germany from Naples. Preferably with a return flight in the late afternoon.
