Unknown Umbria

Discover Umbria

Calendar in stone - Unknown Umbria

It is called the "green heart" of Italy and also offers much more: Umbria shines with a variety of art treasures that leave deep impressions. Not only Assisi, the most famous city, offers visitors excursions into a turbulent past with the outstanding personality of St. Francis and St. Clare. The places you visit during this trip bring Roman and Medieval times into the present and convey the grandeur and diversity of earlier eras.
However, you will not only experience the cultural side of Umbria. Who wouldn't have heard of the wonderful salamis, the strozzapreti (special pasta) and of course the olive oil, which is one of the best in Italy. Also not to be neglected are the great handicraft traditions and a landscape that offers a lot of variety.

Day 1: Arrival in Perugia
Pick up at Rome Fiumicino airport in the morning. In the afternoon you will reach Perugia. There is still time after check-in for a little rest until dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Perugia, the beautiful
In the morning you will explore this beautiful city of Perugia with a city guide (approx. 3 hours). The most important monuments of this old university town include the Paolina fortress, the Fontana Maggiore on the cathedral square, the cathedral San Lorenzo, the guild hall and much more. Enjoy the flair of Corso Mazzini, Perugia's promenade and let this old and yet so young city take its toll on you. For lunch you can choose from the many restaurants. The rest of the day is free to enjoy this wonderful city in a relaxed way. Dinner at the hotel.

3rd day: roots of Umbrian culture - Gubbio
Today the journey goes to Gubbio, the magnificent city that is said to be the most typical of all Umbrian cities. Our visit begins at the Church of San Francesco, where St. Francis is said to have received his cowl. The Piazza Grande, the largest free-floating square and our next visit point, will surely leave a deep impression. Here you will also admire the Palazzo dei Consoli, which dominates the square and in which the Eugubian plates are displayed. You will have a wonderful experience if we take the cable car up to San Ubaldo (6 minutes), from where you have a wonderful view of the city. What better place to have lunch than over the roofs of Gubbio? The body of the city's patron saint and the famous "cere", symbolic candles, are laid out here. Let yourself be surprised! In the afternoon you will get to know the city of Umbria, which is said to be the city of romance par excellence: Spello. The city also offers wonderful works of art, such as in the Cappella Baglioni, the frescoes by Pinturrichio, you will be charmed. After this enjoyment, return to Perugia. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: A lot of chocolate, Hannibal and the Romans
You start this day very "sweet", because Perugia is the seat of the world-famous chocolate manufacturer Perugina. You will visit this one and maybe learn a few things about chocolate that are unknown to you. Recommended to stock up on these fine chocolates here! Not far away is Lake Trasimeno, our next destination and location for one of the most spectacular battles of the Romans against Hannibal. Here you set sail for the largest island, the Isola Maggiore. On the lakeshore you will enjoy a special fish menu in a wonderfully located restaurant (of course, something different for non-fish eaters!) And then you can relax and unwind before we return by boat in the afternoon. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: In the footsteps of St. Francis and a journey through time to the Middle Ages
Morning drive to Assisi. Before you visit St. Francis' tomb, however, follow his footsteps during your lifetime. In S.Maria degli Angeli are the places where he lived and died and his "Porziuncula", the meeting place of his followers, attracts thousands of people. With a city guide you will then get to know the most impressive sights in Assisi, including of course San Francesco as the most important sightseeing point with the tomb of the saint, Santa Chiara, San Rufino and the chapel for the crucifix.
For lunch you will be spoiled at a winery near Foligno! Not only can you taste the Umbrian wine, the food itself has many surprises in store.
In the afternoon there are amazing things in Bevagna. Here you return to the Middle Ages! You will visit old guilds in original workshops here. This includes the creation of paper, the workshop of a painter, the production of candles as well as the production of silk. Return to the hotel. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 6: Relaxation - or unusual pleasure
Now you have had quite exhausting days with diverse experiences, so a day with more rest is definitely appropriate. If you do not want complete relaxation, you can take the opportunity today to visit a cashmere producer and an olive oil producer.
For dinner you are back at the hotel for a delicious menu.

Day 7: Masterpieces of architecture and painting and the ideal city
In the morning we go to Orvieto, the city that was built on tufa and is already visible from afar. Your visit begins at the most important building, the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Not only the magnificent exterior facade can be admired, the interior holds many treasures. Here especially the Cappella del Corporale and the Cappella Nuova with the masterpiece by Signorelli "The Last Judgment". Our route continues through the "classic" Orvieto, past the clock tower based on the Venetian model and the other palazzi to the "promenade" of Orvieto, the Corso Cavour to the famous fountain "Pozzo di San Patrizio", which extends 62 m deep into the earth - a stroke of genius by Sangallo the Younger. Lunch of your choice in one of the typical trattorias and then the opportunity to explore this city on your own. Return to the hotel, dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: Descent into the underworld and Roman genius
After breakfast we drive to Narni. Narni Underground, you will visit the underground Narni here. The origins of this city lie below today's and this tour will amaze you. Chapel, place of worship, dungeon,… a walk through centuries. We then continue to Ferentillo in the Nero Valley, where you have lunch together in an old mill with specialties from the region. You will then experience a highlight of the day! The spectacular Cascata delle Marmore, which plunges 162 m and is one of the masterpieces of Roman inventiveness. It is a sight that will surely remain in your memory for a very long time! In the park surrounding these waterfalls you can climb up to the highest point of the roaring falls or simply admire this spectacle from below. Return and dinner at the hotel.
