In the footsteps of Francis of Assisi

Religious journey - In the footsteps of Saint Francis

The Middle Ages were the time when many monasteries were founded and played a special role. Monasteries were the centers of medieval society. On this trip in Umbria you will get to know the stations of one of the most important founders of the order, who has shaped monasticism over the centuries and who, through his basic ideas, set and lived the guidelines: Francis of Assisi.

Day 1: arrival
You reach Perugia, where you check in at your hotel. Depending on the arrival time, you can take a small city tour. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2: Perugia the beautiful
On this day you will get to know Perugia, the beautiful capital of the Umbria region, but where Francis' illness began after spending over a year in the prison. The cityscape is arguably the most imposing medieval character. Your city guide will show you a lot of this lively city, in the afternoon you can go exploring yourself. Dinner at the hotel.

3rd day: The beginning of a global movement
We cannot fail to pay attention to Santa Maria degli Angeli, where Francis first gathered his followers in the so-called Porziuncula, a little church that the Benedictines awarded him. But here is also the place of his hour of death, his rose garden and his "home". A trip to one of his (mostly unknown) places of work, near Santa Maria degli Angeli, to Rivotorto, goes back even further in the life of the saint. Not to mention Eremo delle Carceri. Francis withdrew to this grotto with a small chapel next to it in the middle of a quiet forest, about 4 km from Assisi, for prayer and meditation. On a stone bridge there is still the oak tree, in the branches of which sat the birds which, according to legend, Francis preached. In the afternoon, visit Assisi - city of the saint and his spiritual sister, which is surely a highlight with the basilica of the saint, which was built in 1228 and the church of Santa Klara.
The Church of San Damiano is one of the important stages in life, because it was even life-determining for the young Francesco. After this certainly insightful day, you will return to the hotel where you will have dinner.

Day 4: Francis of Assisi - From the spoiled youth to the saint
In the morning you leave Perugia to follow the footsteps of St. Francis. The path leads to Gubbio, where Francis received his first cowl and was finally committed to living in poverty and serving God. Gubbio was also one of the places of his wonders, namely that of the tamed wolf.
In Gubbio you will visit the Church of S. Francesco, where he received his cowl, and get to know the city itself even more, because here it says the Palazzo dei Consoli in a free-floating square, and the winding streets take you back to the time of the saint. A nice end to the day will be San Ubaldo, the church of the city patron, high above Gubbio, in which the “cere”, the “candles”, which play the main role every year at a traditional city festival, are also kept.

Day 5: period of fasting
Today is dedicated to Isola Maggiore in Lake Trasimeno, where the saint had fasted for 40 days. On the island, which you reach by ferry from Passignano in the morning, you will visit the place where Francis prayed and had his night's rest. In addition, the Isola Maggiore offers the ideal ambience for finding your own peace and serenity.
A nice restaurant for lunch break directly at the lake will spoil you with specialties. In the afternoon you will return to Passignano by ferry.
From there it goes around half the lake with beautiful panoramic views to Cortona, a pretty medieval town, where Francis opened the first other monastery in 1211, the hermitage Le Celle. Return to Perugia for hotel and dinner.

Day 6: Arrivederci
It is the day of the return journey. We hope you will remember the trip well. Transfer to the airport.
