Day 1: Arrival - the Castelli Romani
Pick up at Rome Fiumicino airport. Drive to the hotel above Lake Albano, Hotel Castelvecchio in Castel Gandolfo. Depending on the arrival time, we can take a small city tour. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant with specialties from the Lazio region.
Day 2: Roma Eterna
The morning is dedicated to Ostia Antica, the once great port city, which was built around 400 BC. emerged, the origins of which are still not clear. Roman life at that time is still easy to understand here and probably no visitor remains unaffected by the monumental buildings. Afterwards you have time to relax with a small lunch. In the afternoon you will return to Albano, where we would like to introduce you to some very unexpected monuments that the normal tourist will never see. You can be excited! After this day with many new impressions you return to the hotel. In the evening, a highlight regarding dinner awaits you - don't tell us more!
Day 3: Where the unexpected awaits you
A very special park awaits you today on the Pontine Plain, near the Appia. You will enter the magic garden of Ninfa. Thousands of different plants grow here between the ruins of the centuries-old buildings of the Gaetani family and give the impression of an endless peace. The interplay of colors and fragrances offers a true oasis for the senses. After the visit, we follow a winding road up to Sermoneta with one of the few medieval castelli that remained completely intact. Here you will be introduced to lunch with a specialty in a special restaurant!
After a short walk through this magical town, we would like to introduce you to a very close place that is very unusual: Norma. Located high above the Pontine Marshes, you will find the original city called Norba, which existed well before the Romans. You will take a short excursion through the remains of the ancient city of the Volsk people, which dates back to around 500 years BC. BC Latin colony. This archaeological area is almost unknown and will amaze visitors, as will its history. Dinner in a renowned restaurant.
Day 4: marvels of man and nature
The day begins with the onward journey to Terracina, where you will move into your next hotel (4 * Hotel Mediterraneo, 100 m from the sea) and follow the Appia Antica in a (unfortunately) new look. Anxur - the people of Terracina gave this name to the city of Terracina as early as 500 BC. It was an important traffic junction and separated the Pontine plain from that of Fondi through the mountains of the Monti Ausoni. These extend to the coast here and give the city a fantastic backdrop. In the afternoon, our tour starts on the mountain dominating the Monte S. Angelo. Here is the sanctuary of Jupiter Anxur, a huge building with a wonderful view of the city, which was located on the original Appia Antica and led over this mountain. After the visit, you descend to the ancient district of Terracina. The abundance of cultural assets is overwhelming, starting in the cathedral with its cosmatic works of art, the remains of the Appia Antica that still survives here through the piazza, the remains of the temple and the Roman theater. Dinner in the restaurant in the evening.
Day 5: Aha experiences!
In the morning you drive to Sperlonga. Not far from the small coastal town are the remains of one of the most impressive villas of the Roman period: the Villa des Tiberius and the associated grotto. In the museum you can find the gigantic finds of the sculptures that adorned the grotto. In addition, corresponding replicas that give us a clear idea of the complete marble sculptures. You have free choice of lunch (but can also be organized). After a short stay in this picturesque coastal town with its wonderful medieval town center, the Appia Antica leads us up to Itri and Fondi. The landscape amazes, barren slopes of the Monti Aurunci that border the Monti Ausoni, terraces created for the olive trees, a few sheep here and there - a different Italy! In the solitude of these mountains, you will encounter an original piece of Via Appia, about 2.5 km long. On this piece you will follow the extended wheel tracks of the Romans moving along here and you will easily be set back millennia. (Hike along this route without much effort but with a lot of experience). We return to Terracina via an impressive landscape that everyone will remember, but not without a short stay in Fondi with its Castello dei Gaetani and a leisurely break. Dinner in a restaurant.
Day 6: 150 arches and Roman theater
150 arches of an aqueduct announce the proximity of Minturno this morning. Unfortunately not conserved, but still no less impressive. A Roman theater and many remnants of the original city are much better preserved in the Archaeological Park. You and a section of the Appia Antica tell of life before that, before you return to our times and nearby with regional specialties in a rustic restaurant be pampered. You will then return to Terracina, where you will have free time to browse through the many shops or simply enjoy sweet idleness. You will have your farewell dinner in the restaurant.
Day 7: Ciao Appia Antica
Today you say goodbye to a part of Italy that, despite its great history, has remained in the limelight to this day. Depending on the departure time, transfer to Rome to the airport. Possibility to extend your stay in Rome. © ulla kastner
